Feedback Friday

*For those of you who don't know Feedback Friday is a chance to look at each other's work and offer constructive feedback.

Wow, I feel like I've learned so much this week. The free class I'm taking at JessicaSpague.com is awesome! It is very well put together and clear. I've learned loads in just 4 days. I tried out Rachel from American Mum's advice and changed some settings on my camera. I set the in camera sharpening to +3, the contrast to +2 and the saturation to +2. I have to say, I see a difference! For the first time I edited my photos in PS7 without actions. I did all the layers, hue/saturation, and levels adjustments myself, yay! I still did all the cropping and straightening in Picasa simply because it is just easier for me still. I also did a little sharpening and noise reduction in paint.net. I guess old habits die hard....I am happy with the results, my only "complaint" is the slightly reddish hue on her face. How do you adjust just that? Thanks in advance for your feedback! Happy Friday :)

Here's what I did:

1)Straighed and cropped (Picasa3)
2)Adjusted Levels (PS7)
3)Created new Hue and Saturation layer (PS7)
4)Adjusted saturation to +15 (PS7)
5)Created new Brightness and Contrast layer (PS7)
6)Adjusted Brightness to +5 and Contrast to +10
7)Saved as a JPEG
8)In paint.net lasso'd each eye and sharpened to 5
9)Reduced noise to radius 10 stregnth 0.20
10)Sharpened each eye again to 2

Hey Katelyn! My daughter's name is Brooklyn as well!! Oh yes...common bond there...

I am a new contributer with iHeartfaces. Here is where you could possibly improve some, in my opinion. The original crop is awkward, having children myself, I KNOW that we cannot always set up a shot the way we want it, we just have to run with it, so in that case, ignore that statement. LOL Sometimes we have to work with busy children who just want to play, so let's work with what we have here: I cropped close in on the face. I did most of the work in levels adjusting the arrows in highlights/midtones/shadows. Then reduced the red by 5% in hue/saturation. And boosted the blue by 10% and the yellow up by 5%. I cleaned up her face of any food crumbs or nose gunkies with my clone tool. I used my burn tool set on MIDTONES reduced to 20% and burned the edges a little to bring emphasis on the beautiful face. After that, only on a whim, I used PW's eye actions on the eyes and then reduced it down to only 20%. I didn't want to do it too much, because they didn't need it at all. Used USM settings of 80/1/0 on the overall picture.

Thank you for letting me play with your Brooklyn!

Hi Katelyn :) Thank you for your tips on my photo today -- they're really appreciated. As you saw from my shot I'm extremely amateur, so I don't have any offers of improvements on your photo, but I want to say I love the changes you made and your daughter's eyes are just glowing and gorgeous. Thank you so much for taking the time to drop by & offer your suggestions, I really appreciate them!

Katelyn, it's just the luck of the draw, but I'm so happy to get to play with another one of Brooklyn's photos. You may get tired of my same old routine, though!

First of all, great job with your camera settings! Your SOOC shot is really good, and won't take much editing at all. She has a really sweet expression (I've never seen her otherwise!) and light, focus, and background are good.

I agree with everything Dana said, and I love her edit! Not to be a big ole copy cat, I cropped vertically just for variation.

I brightened it up in levels, to get the skin tones lighter. I also brought down the reds using a curves adjustment layer, just the red channel. I did use TRA Pro Retouch to smooth the skin a tad. And the patch tool for the little crumbs and boogies. I also reduced the blues and increased the yellows to warm it up a bit.

Thank you Katelyn! It's always a treat to see Brooklyn!

Hey I was reading a comment on another blog that you made and was wondering if you could tell me about pioneer women? I think that is what you called it?!?!

She is a doll and I love how her eyes pop!!

Such a dollbaby! This is what I did:

1) cropped for the old rule of thirds (I put her to the right of the frame after reading a tutorial explaining how this emphasizes movement to the viewers eyes)
2)Ran CoffeeShop's Color Pop action
3)Lassoed the eyes and ran an unsharp mask
